چکیده

Numerically inverting simultaneous pressureinterference measurements from multiple observation wells can help to establish the large-scale spatial distributions of permeability and storage within a geothermal reservoir. For realistic results, it is important to incorporate double-porosity (MINC) descriptions into the modeling process to properly reproduce the short-term pressure-transient response to production or injection. A new finite-difference inversion program has been developed for this purpose. The reservoir is represented as a threedimensional network of grid blocks, and the description is restricted to single-phase (liquid) flow. The single-phase limitation permits the linearization of the pressure-diffusion equation in the sub-grid “matrix region”, so that MINC descriptions may be accommodated at little additional computing cost. The “simulated annealing” method is used as the optimizing technique.

Lab and Field Scale Modeling of Near Miscible CO2 Injection in Different Porous Mediums

The main purpose of this investigation is to study the effect of near miscible CO2 injection in different porous mediums on both lab and field scales. This effect can be traced by the change of two-phase gas-oil relative permeability curves. In this work, the experiments have been performed on three rock types (i.e. sandstone, dolomite, and artificial fractured sandstone) based on an incrementa...

Application of Self-potential Measurements to Geothermal Reservoir Engineering: Characterization of Fractured Reservoirs

An “EKP-postprocessor” computational tool was developed several years ago to calculate space/time distributions of electrokinetic potentials resulting from histories of underground conditions (pressure, temperature, liquid-phase saturation, concentration of dissolved species, etc.) computed by unsteady multidimensional geothermal reservoir simulations (Ishido and Pritchett, 1996). Since that ti...

Modeling Fluid Flow and Electrical Resistivity in Fractured Geothermal Reservoir Rocks

Phase change of pore fluid (boiling/condensing) in rock cores under conditions representative of geothermal reservoirs results in alterations of the electrical resistivity of the samples. In fractured samples, phase change can result in resistivity changes that are more than an order of magnitude greater than those measured in intact samples. These results suggest that electrical resistivity mo...

Modeling of 3d Crack Attributes and Crack Densities in Geothermal Reservoirs

We describe a Matlab-based, interactive, selfcontained, graphics-oriented code to process shearwave splitting data from microearthquakes in order to image the fractured subsurface in geothermal reservoirs. The code consists of three main modules: 1) data processing, 2) forward modeling, and 3) inverse modeling. The first module allows for rapid and precise measurement of fast S-wave polarizatio...

Updated Methods for Estimating Recovery Factors for Geothermal Resources

An important aspect of geothermal resource assessment methodology is the development of geothermal resource models consistent with the production histories of exploited geothermal fields. The primary method applied in past United States Geological Survey (USGS) assessments was the volume method, in which the recoverable heat is estimated from the thermal energy available in a reservoir of unifo...
